Fundación Diagrama launches a survey on active ageing in rural areas aimed at professionals and volunteers of the Third Sector

Fundación Diagrama has developed a survey to find out the opinion of professionals and volunteers from organisations in the Third Sector for Social Action who work directly or indirectly with older people in rural areas. The survey will be open until the 31st July. This forms part of the “Programme for promoting active and healthy ageing: a comparative study on the actions of the Third Sector for Social Action in Spain and in third countries in rural areas”, developed by Fundación Diagrama in 2025 and funded by the Secretary of State for Social Rights of the Ministry of Social Rights, Consumer Affairs and 2030 Agenda. The survey is accessible through the following link: https://encuestas.fundaciondiagrama.es/index.php/477346

The initiative is being carried out by the team from Fundación Diagrama’s Research and Development Department, and is based on the need to understand the opinion of professionals and volunteers from Third Sector organisations in Spain, Iceland, Norway, and the UK. Furthermore, it seeks to strengthen a culture of dialogue and learning between different organisations that work in this environment, as well as promote synergies between them, which will contribute towards generating improvements at the social level.

The promotion of active ageing in rural areas has benefits for both the older people themselves and the community as a whole. For the older people, physically and mentally participating in social life entails a better quality of life; continuous learning and the carrying out of activities mean better independence and autonomy; social interaction and group actions reduce isolation and loneliness; leisure and culture activities lead to improvements in physical and mental health.

Similarly, the benefits for the community are just as satisfactory and enriching, as by encouraging the participation of older people in social life, rural areas are revitalised; promoting intergenerational relationships between members of the community improves its social fabric; supporting activities and programmes aimed at older people means employment rates increase; and a healthier, safer, more sociably active environment improves the quality of life for the whole rural community.

The programme for promoting active and healthy ageing that Fundación Diagrama is developing seeks to promote all of these aspects and contribute to a more inclusive society that is more respectful towards older people. As a first step in the analysis of the current situation and the improvements that should be implemented, this survey has been launched, and will remain active until the 31st July. The results will be included in the final project report: https://www.fundaciondiagrama.es/m/envejecimiento-rural.
