Care Homes for the Elderly

The care homes for the elderly are open gerontology centres providing comprehensive social and healthcare attention for elderly people with some degree of dependence, in temporary or permanent residential regimes. The main characteristics of these centres are as follows:

  • They are open to the community and maintain an open relationship with other care services (primary and specialised care).
  • In general, they look after people over the age of 65 with some degree of physical or psychological dependence.
  • They provide an answer to social problems (isolation, lack of resources…), as well as health problems (unstable chronic illness, nursing…).
  • Team work: doctors, physiotherapists, psychologists, nurses, social workers, healthcare support workers and other professionals tackle daily tasks using a comprehensive, multidisciplinary approach.
